The Accounting Division conducts state-of-the-art research on a wide range of topics in financial accounting, managerial accounting, tax, information economics and corporate finance. Faculty members have published their research in the leading journals of accounting, finance and economics. Our faculty members are on the editorial boards of leading journals and are actively shaping accounting practice through consulting engagements in the corporate world. Further, the division is influencing the future of the accounting profession through our top-rated PhD program.

This course is ideal for any accounting or finance professional wishing to boost their skills set and build knowledge and experience in a critical tool of complex financial commerce. Graduates with practical experience on Bloomberg terminals are forward-looking and dynamic finance professionals with first class employment opportunities.

Students interested in real estate or insurance will also take Finance respectively. For students with good quantitative preparation but limited background in Finance, the electives will typically be MBA-level finance courses; for students with previous MBA degrees, the electives may consist of courses in mathematics or statistics.

The objectives of the Accounting PHD Program are to

PhD in Finance

Two major lines of academic research in Finance are corporate finance and investments. Fundamental research questions in corporate finance are based on managerial decisions related to real investments and financing, as well as on how governance structures affect these decisions. Investment analysis concentrates on the design and efficiency of financial instruments including stocks, bonds, derivatives, structured products and the institutional structure through which these instruments are offered. Research questions in this area relate to the pricing of financial assets, measurement and the efficient allocation of financial risk, and the effects of the market mechanism on the financial system.

The Finance PhD program seeks to admit students with the highest possible aptitude and potential for academic careers. For most students, the Ph.D. program consists of two years of course work followed by a preliminary examination, and then two to three years of dissertation research. All admitted students receive financial support, either in the form of a fellowship or through employment as a research or teaching assistant, in combination with tuition and service fee waivers.

If your ultimate goal is to work as a senior manager or entrepreneur, a Masters degree will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary for that function.

The PhD degree, on the other hand, prepares you to do research and investigation in either academic or non-academic research centers.

A PhD in Marketing is not a super MBA. In fact, upon completion of a doctoral degree, the individual gains such a narrow specialization on a particular field within Marketing (versus a broad proficiency in Marketing practice, for example) that his/her ability to perform as a manager need not necessarily be enhanced over that of a person who completed a Masters degree.
